8. _M_o_v_i_e__P_l_a_y_e_r
Movie Player (invoked from the command line as _m_o_v_i_e_p_l_a_y_e_r)
is a graphical tool that allows you to play back movie
files. Movie files can be created using Movie Maker, Media
Convert, Movie Convert, _d_m_c_o_n_v_e_r_t(_1), or Capture (see
below). Movies may be silent or include a soundtrack.
See the man page _m_o_v_i_e_p_l_a_y_e_r(1) or Movie Player's on-line
help for more information.
The directory /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_d_a_t_a/_m_o_v_i_e_s contains three sample
movies. There is an SGI movie file, _s_o_m_e_r_s_a_u_l_t._m_o_v_i_e, a
sample QuickTime movie, _s_a_m_p_l_e_Q_T._m_o_v, and a sample MPEG-1
systems bit stream, _s_t_u_d_i_o._m_p_s.

8.1 _K_n_o_w_n__P_r_o_b_l_e_m_s__a_n_d__W_o_r_k_a_r_o_u_n_d_s
This section lists problems in the Movie Player software and
ways to work around them.
+o The current SGI movie format version number is 3.
Movies made or edited with IRIX 5.1 or later releases
of Movie Maker might not play or might play incorrectly
with the IRIX 4.0.5 version of Movie Player. However,
the current version of Movie Player plays all versions
(1, 2 and 3) of movies correctly.
+o Movie Player does not work correctly over the network.
The user interface and images will display on the local
machine, but the audio will play on the remote machine.
+o Movie Player does not support the playback of FIT image
sequences in this release. You can work around this
problem by using Movie Maker or Make Movie to convert
your FIT images to SGI Movie format.
+o If you try to play a very large movie, such as one that
is full screen, the image will not display correctly if
it is zoomed at all.
+o Movie Player does not currently support the Cosmo
Compress option. To play back Cosmo-compatible JPEG
movies with full motion video, use the _d_m_p_l_a_y(1)
utility, found in the _d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._s_w._u_t_i_l_i_t_i_e_s
subsystem.
8.2 _C_h_a_n_g_e_s__f_r_o_m__p_r_e_v_i_o_u_s__M_o_v_i_e__P_l_a_y_e_r
This section lists the changes in the functionality and
interface of Movie Player from the versions shipped with
IRIX 5.3.
+o Movie Player can now open and play many more types of
QuickTime files than in previous releases. In
particular, Movie Player will now play back QuickTime
movies which were created using the Cinepak (also
called "Compact Video") compression scheme.
+o Movie Player can now play MPEG-1 video bit stream
files, and MPEG-1 system bit stream files which contain
one audio track and one video track.
